皮 鞋製造商W.L.道格拉斯(Douglas)是全國知名的。在他早年的奮鬥期間，曾有以下的事發生︰他失業了一段時間，以致他身上只剩下一美元。然而，他 把一半的錢，即五毛錢，投進他教會的捐獻籃中。隔日早晨，他聽見在鄰近的鎮上有一份工作可做。到那鎮去的火車費用是一美元。從每個角度來看，他若不曾給與 那五毛錢就會是更明智的。然而，他用剩下的五毛錢買票，到了他想要去的地方之一半路程時，他下了火車，並開始朝他的目的地前進。
走了沒多遠，他就聽到他正身處的鎮上有一家工廠正在雇人。在三十分鐘內，他得到一份工作，每週的薪水比他若到另一個鎮去做的工作之薪水，多了五美元。
我原本要花我的什一稅的一部份去買一雙皮鞋，因我心想，在月底前我可把所用了的什一稅補回去。但後來我想︰「那是上主的錢。它甚至不是我的。我必須以後再買鞋了。」因此我繼續往前走，在經過鞋店和一排屋子後，我在路上檢到一筆相等於三十美元的錢，那足夠讓我買鞋和付這筆錢的什一稅*。服從是值得的。（*納什一稅–把收入的十分一奉獻給上帝的工作。）
對我們的財政的一個很好的分析，不是在於在我把我的錢給了上帝多少，而是我把多少上帝的錢留下來給自己。
